Maybe you haven't heard of email counselling so you're wondering what it's all about and how it works?
It's not a new concept but it is gaining more in popularity since Covid times. It's another way to access help from a counsellor. Like you can do online video counselling, some people also offer telephone therapy but I offer email counselling. I like words and reading.
What is email counselling?
In contrast to what could be classed as “traditional therapy”, where the client would talk to the counsellor, or therapist, (you know the kind you see in films where they're both in a room?) with email counselling the sessions are written in an email.
As this is text- based we would not be meeting face to face (unless you want to for a discovery call first). This can feel safer for those who would rather not be seen or heard.
How does email counselling work?
Our session would be an email exchange. 1 email from you, and 1 email reply from me, the counsellor, would count as 1 session. We would write a maximum of 500 words and we would agree to send our emails by a certain day and time. That way you’ll always know when you will hear back from me by.
The process I was taught requires 2 working days to work on my reply to you.
Will anyone else see the email I wrote?
No, is the simple answer.
I use a secure, encrypted email provider called Proton Mail. For this to be secure, I would ask for you to set up a Proton Mail email address. I can help you with details on how to do this.
Similarly to if you were having online counselling, I would ask that you are somewhere you can’t be overlooked and won’t be disturbed.
Why is email counselling a different price to seeing you in person?
I have priced my in-person fees slightly higher due to the increased cost of renting out the rooms I do my client work in. Email counselling however, I can do from my own office at home.
